Pericles Lewnes is best known for the feature-length horror spoof REDNECK ZOMBIES, which was produced and shot by ColorCast Productions in 1986 and originally distributed on video. Dubbed a “cult classic” by horror fans, REDNECK ZOMBIES was included in the 1980s edition of “Trivial Pursuit” and is still being distributed worldwide on DVD. A 20th Anniversary DVD edition of REDNECK ZOMBIES is currently in production for release at the end of the year.
After the success of REDNECK ZOMBIES Lewnes continued to work as a second unit director and special effects artist on feature films (TOXIC AVENGER II, KABUKIMAN, Troma’s War), as well as a director for television commercials, documentaries, and music videos.
Lewnes recently won “Best Documentary” in the 2006 FAIF International Film Festival for FIGHTER, a gritty exposé of the birth of mixed martial arts featuring Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) Randy Couture. The 2006 FAIF award was followed by a “Best Biography” award for FIGHTER in the 2006 New York International Film Festival.
In 2003 Lewnes wrote and began shooting his second feature film LOOP, a low budget independent production shot on video. LOOP celebrated its Southern California premiere in October 2007 at the Indie Fest/FAIF festival in Anaheim, where it was awarded “Best Visual Effects.”
Lewnes’s other credits include a number of award winning music videos and the documentary FAST GAME, FAST MONEY: THE GRIFTERS OF NEW YORK, which won the Grand Prize in the Rosebud Festival (1994) and a Cine Golden Eagle (1994).
FREEDOM PLAZA, a 4-minute cinema verité style short film directed by Lewnes, premiered in August 2007 in the “People and Places” program of the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films.
Lewnes was born in Annapolis, Maryland, and currently works in Washington (D.C.) as a television cameraman/editor, when he’s not making movies.
