11.09.2009 – In October, the U.S. Department of Labor stated that the unemployment rate rose to 10.2 percent, the highest since April 1983. In this time of uncertainty people need to know that their struggle is not forgotten and that there is still hope. The film, Someplace Like America, is a series of interconnected episodes in the lives of various contemporary characters, dramatizing the painful repercussions of economic hard times caused by the collapse of New Hampshire’s paper industry. The connective narrative thread is the saga of Dutch, a long unemployed steelworker and transient poet, as he returns to his ailing family after a prolonged absence and attempts to reestablish contact with his grandson.
